The program also offers scholars the opportunity to develop leadership skills and build a lasting connection with New Zealand.
Scholarships are fully funded to cover tuition fees, return airfares, insurance, basic living allowance and set-up costs in New Zealand. They are offered for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
The New Zealand Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade MFAT, has made these scholarships available to citizens from selected developing countries to enable them to undertake tertiary level academic study in New Zealand.
The purpose is to invest in the education of citizens from these countries, enabling them to contribute back to their home country upon their return with new knowledge and skills to support key development areas.
The Manaaki Scholarship Programme enables citizens of eligible developing countries to undertake full-time postgraduate study at New Zealand universities and selected Institutes of Technology. The purpose of the scholarship is for candidates to gain knowledge and skills in subject areas that will assist in the development of their home country.
Scholars are expected to return to their home country for at least two years after their study to apply the new skills and knowledge they have gained. The partners of scholars may be eligible for a work visa to allow them to accompany their partner during this time.
The scholarship provides a unique opportunity for candidates to study at a world-class university and experience the culture of New Zealand while helping their own communities through development projects. Scholarship recipients also receive support throughout their study, such as a living allowance, academic and cultural mentoring and the opportunity to participate in a community placement.
Requirements for Applicants
The program provides full tertiary scholarships for students from selected developing countries to study in New Zealand. It aims to build potential leaders and provide them with world-class education, lifelong friendships and vital skills they can bring back to their home countries and communities.
Applicants can apply for the scholarship online via their personal account at the Manaaki website. Once the account is created, they can login and start the application process by clicking the “register” button. They will need to enter an email address and the Eligibility Code that they have emailed to themselves or written down. The system will run a check to make sure that the email address is unique and not being used by another applicant.
The applicants need to select their preferred educational institution and courses, and they are also required to confirm that they can meet the minimum academic entry standards and English language requirements of the institution or courses. However, they are not required to submit their results of an English language proficiency test until they are shortlisted for a scholarship.
The scholarship application process is quite lengthy, and can take weeks or months to complete. To avoid mistakes, applicants should ensure that they carefully read and understand the instructions for their country.
Also, they should be aware of the maximum character limits and make sure that their answers are concise. In addition, applicants should avoid cheating or plagiarism as this could result in the rejection of their applications.
Applicants are required to fill out their personal details, academic background, and motivation to study in New Zealand. They are also required to provide references and certifications that support their scholarship application.
Furthermore, they must also meet the minimum English language requirement specified by their preferred education institution. The selection panel will then review the applications and choose candidates to receive scholarships.
The selected scholars will be provided with various benefits, including full tuition fees, living allowance, a work-integrated learning component, establishment allowance, medical and travel insurance until the end of their studies in New Zealand, and research or thesis costs for postgraduate research students.
